Mullein Leaf Tea
Mullein is native to Europe and Asia, although it has been naturalized in the U.S. It bears yellow clustered flowers and is known by many names, including Donkey's Ears, Bunny's Ears and Velvet Plant. Mullein has a long history of use in many cultures. It has a high mucilage content and contains mild saponins, making it suitable for occasional needs of the respiratory system.
Therapeutic Actions and Indications:
Mullein is excellent in supporting upper respiratory complaints such as coughs due to its tonic action on mucous membranes of the respiratory system. It also reduces inflammation of the trachea and at the same time soothes inflamed tissues. Mullein can be used to help support its expectorant, demulcent, disinfectant and mild diuretic properties. Mullein's key constituents are Flavonoids, Tannins, Volatile oils, Mucilage, Triterpenoid saponins. Mullein is used specifically for coughs with hard cough and soreness. It can also be tried to help support colds and congestion. The leaves and flowers can be used to reduce mucous and stimulate coughing up of phlegm. It has also been shown to have efficacy as a disinfectant.
